Flag Raising on Memorial Day Weekend

For more than 30 years, Troop 333 has raised the flags on Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend at Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Peninsula, Ohio.

During this special event, Scouts, Troop Leaders and family members raise over 400 US service flags of veterans buried at the cemetery.  The transition from the green fields of the cemetery to hundreds of American flags blowing in the wind is something special to see on Memorial Day weekend.

Details:

  • Scouts are expected to wear their Class A uniform.
  • The entire family is welcome to join in!  Bring your camera!
  • Please bring work gloves, a sturdy screwdriver, water and sunscreen.
  • In the event of inclement weather, please see the troop website for schedule adjustments or cancellation details.

Eagle Service Projects

As part of the requirements for Eagle, Scouts are required to complete a service project.

Recent projects have included:

  • Replacing hardware and rope on 50 flag poles at Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Peninsula, Ohio.
  • Restoration and improvement of playground facilities at the First Congregational Church in Hudson, Ohio.
  • Laying brick at Case Barlow Farms in Hudson, Ohio.
  • Installation of a pedestrian bridge at Hudson Springs Park, Hudson, Ohio.
Troop Service Projects
  • Following the Klondike Campout (Jan. 2014), Troop 333 donated pasta, meatballs, and sausages to the Peter Maurin Center, which serves the hungry in Akron.  The donation was particularly appreciated due to the frigid temperatures, which closed Akron schools for part of that week, leading to a need for lunch service in the area.
  • During Fall of 2013, Troop 333 Scouts and adult volunteers re-leveled flagstone pavers, and constructed and installed outdoor benches for the Peninsula Public Library in Peninsula, Ohio.
  • As a “thank you” to Christ Church Episcopal, which provides the site for our meetings, Troop 333 regularly participates in projects to clean and organize areas on the church grounds.
  • As a “thank you” to hosts of our Aviation Merit Badge Campout in September, 2011, the troop performed a service project to maintain the grounds at Hinde Airport in Huron, Ohio.
  • To help in preserving Hudson’s local history, Troop 333 regularly volunteers for service projects restoring Case Barlow Farm.
