Memorial Day Weekend Flag Raising

Sun May 24, 7:30 am - Mon May 25, 6:00 pm

Northlawn Memorial Gardens

Peninsula, OH 44264

For more than 30 years, Troop 333 has raised the flags on Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend at Northlawn Memorial Gardens.  During this special event, Scouts, Troop Leaders and family members raise over 400 US service flags of veterans buried at the cemetery.  The transition from the green fields of the cemetery to hundreds of American flags blowing in the wind is something special to see on Memorial Day weekend.

Schedule:

  • Raising on Sunday, May 24 at 8:00 am
  • Lowering on Sunday, May 24 at 6:00 pm
  • Raising on Monday, May 25 at 7:30 am
  • Lowering on Monday, May 25 at 6:00 pm

Details:

  • All scouts are expected to participate in both raising and lowering both days.  Parents are welcome to help with the flags.
  • Scouts are expected to wear their Class A uniform and tan or green pants or shorts.
  • Meet in the Maintenance building at the Northlawn Cemetery both mornings to pick up the flags.  From there we will go out in crews to start raising the flags.  If this is your first time participating and you can’t find the Maintenance building meet us at the flag poles.
  • We will start taking the flags down both nights at 6:00 pm.  When you arrive at the cemetery, start taking the flags down.  We do not fold the flags in the traditional triangle.  Once all the flags are down, we will meet at the Maintenance building to fold and put the flags away.
  • Please bring work gloves, a sturdy screwdriver or paint can opener (to help pull down on the rope clips), water and sunscreen.
  • In the event of inclement weather, and a decision is made to not raise the flags, or to lower them early, an email will be sent to the Troop 333 parents list.  If it starts to rain, please check your phone an email for messages.  If no message is sent out, plan to be at the event at the scheduled times.
